I was fortunate enough to have a taste of African inspiration at WOZA! restaurant, located in the heart of the Mother City. This traditionally-inspired eatery has relocated from the Golden Acre to new premises on the corner of Burg and Church streets, just around the corner from Greenmarket Square. The Proudly African-vibe has impressed locals and those visiting from abroad.
WOZA! is a boldly African restaurant serving delicious traditional cuisine – meals that are steeped in the traditions and tastes of our continent. The menu includes homemade local delicacies such as vetkoek, roosterkoek, muriwo, tripe, chicken wings, burgers and traditional stews.
I tried a good ol’ boerie roll which was served on roosterkoek with chakalaka – the portion sizes are ridiculously big especially considering their prices. Meals range from R13 to R60 for the meaty dishes and R5 to R10.50 for starch items such as pap, rice or samp.
I tried their vetkoek with mince and my gran has some serious competition. I also had an incredible coffee milkshake made with “real ice cream” – best one I’ve had in Cape Town without a doubt. WOZA! is, hands down, one of the most affordable eateries with an experience in the CBD.
For the beer lovers, they have a traditional Zimbabwean beer called Chibuku Shake Shake, which is made from fermented maize and sorghum – only available at WOZA! in the Western Cape.
WOZA! restaurant was a hive of people, especially in lunch hour. People from all spheres of life were tucking in, sleeves rolled up and just enjoying their meal. The walls are splashed with a rainbow of vibrant colours, authentic décor and smiling staff make for an all-around fantastic experience.
