#KirstenboschTreeCanopyWalkway

Cape Town’s majestic Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens is celebrating their 101st birthday today. The Kirstenbosch Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway was launched in May to celebrate the 100 years of the Gardens existence. This walkway weaves in between 400 trees above the Arboretum. The panoramic views on the 130 meter long structure are exquisite. Otherwise known as the “boomslang”, it meanders amongst trees overlooking Cape Town with views of Table Mountain and the Hottentot Holland in the far distance.

The 5 million rand project had been planned over several years and was carefully designed so that the structure would blend in with the natural surroundings. Mark Thomas, a renowned South African architect, known for creating the “legendary treehouses” seen at Cape Town music festivals and  the inflammable structures at AfrikaBurn, was inspired by the skeletal-like appearance of a snake when designing the walkway. When on it, there is the sensation of walking through a rib cage with the rails protecting you on either side, leaving you feel safe and secure despite being 11 meters above the ground.

This aerial forest boardwalk is definitely worth the scenic 15 minute walk to get there; the picturesque vistas are incredible. The direction I took on the walkway led towards the Summer Concerts Venue where there is a path that leads down to the left which is worth strolling through. This fairy tale-like route meanders over and around the incredible root systems of the trees that were seen from above when on the Canopy Walk.

The Kirstenbosch Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway is free but the admission fee to enter Kirstenbosch still applies. With the celebration of their 101st birthday today, 1 July,  free entry is given to all visitors. This is the perfect opportunity to explore Cape Town’s botanical gardens. This #CPTBucketList activity is suitable for all Capetonians. Adventures lie on our doorstep, go explore them!
